Hi There, I am Warren McNeil from Team McNeil at Re/Max Twin City Realty

If you are looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city but still need access to a city nearby, then Elmira Ontario is for you. Elmira is a small town in Woolwich Township which is 10 minutes North of Waterloo and 20 minutes east of Guelph. The population of Elmira is around 12,000 people according to census data from 2006.

Elmira is best known for it’s hockey team the Elmira Sugar Kings and the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival which takes place in April. But there’s more! This year the Syrup festival will take place on March 27, 2010.

- Elmira is close to all amenities. Within town, You are only about 5 minutes away from grocery stores, local shops, coffee shops and restaurants. Elmira even has a 24 hour grocery store!

- Elmira has lots of hiking trails. The Lions Lake Trail which is 7 km long and the Kissing bridge trail which is an abandoned railroad that travels from Millbank to Guelph. for 45kms. If you like hiking, cycling or running then you will find these natural scenic trails very enjoyable.

- Woolwich and Elmira  have two newspapers that provide local information about the township and Elmira. They are the Woolwich Observer and the Elmira Independent. Want to know more about Elmira and Woolwich Township, contact us and we’ll send you copies of these newpapers.

 - In 2009 Grand River Transit started offering bus service to and from  Waterloo’s Conestogo Mall via St Jacobs to Elmira. This is convenient for local residents who wanted to go back and forth to Waterloo each day.

 - As I mentioned earlier, Elmira is famous for their local Junior B hockey team, the Elmira Sugar Kings. In 2009 Woolwich placed 3rd in the Kraft Hockeyville contest and was awarded $25,000.  If you are a hockey enthusiast, then Elmira is definitely the place to be.

 - Also In 2009, Woolwich township built a brand new recreation centre in Elmira with twin arenas, a community centre, a fitness centre, a walking track and a swimming pool.

 - One of my favourite things about Elmira is the World reknowned Elmira Maple Syrup Festival which takes place in Early April. This single one day event attracts around 60,000 people. Isn’t that amazing?

 - Since Elmira is so close to Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph you get the best of both worlds. Smalltownliving with easy access to the city. In 10 short minutes, you are close to a huge farmers market, lots of shopping, a movie theatre.

 - With regards to housing, prices are between 130,000 up to 650,000 for high-end homes. The average house price for a singe- detached home is around 292,000. Prices are similar to Waterloo.

Well I hope you found the information here useful today and if you would like to find out more information about housing for sale in Elmira and Woolwich Township or would like an information package about the area, please contact us at www.elmirealestate.ca

Local Author Malcolm Gladwell coming to Elmira for Fundraiser

By Warren McNeil,

Elmira native and best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell  (Wikipedia) is coming  home for a pair of fundraisers to support the Woolwich Councelling Centre . WCC an agency that serves the Woolwich, Wellesley and surrounding areas.

Here are the particulars of the event see also http://www.woolwich.ca/en/newsevents/Events.asp

The following information about Malcolm Gladwell is from his blog.

I’m a writer for the New Yorker magazine, and the author of two books, “The Tipping Point: How Little Things Make a Big Difference” and “Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking.” I was born in England, and raised in southwestern Ontario in Canada. Now I live in New York City.

My great claim to fame is that I’m from the town where they invented the BlackBerry. My family also believes (with some justification) that we are distantly related to Colin Powell. I invite you to look closely at the photograph above and draw your own conclusions.

Here are some of the books that he has written:

I will be attending the event at Floradale Mennonite Church with Melanie and some friends. This should be a terrific evening and I am really looking forward to it.

10 Reasons Elmira Ontario is a great place to live

By Warren McNeil

10 Reasons Elmira Ontario is a great place to live

Elmira, in the township of Woolwich is approximately 10 minutes from North Waterloo

The following information about Elmira was available from the Township of Woolwich’s website:
Source: http://www.woolwich.ca/en/tourism/Communities.asp#Elmira

“In 1834, Edward Bristow became Elmira’s first settler when he purchased 53 acres of land at this location for 50 cents per acre.  First called Bristow’s Corners, then West Woolwich, the settlement adopted the name Elmira in 1853.  The earliest inhabitants were of English and Irish origin, including families named: Halfpenny, Seaton, Bristow, Isenhour, Kenning, Thompson, Thomas, Girling and others.

In the 1850’s, German settlers moved into the community.  Among these were: Oswald, Esche, Steffen and Tresinger.  These settlers followed the original settlement of Waterloo County by other German immigrants, namely the Pennsylvanian Dutch, or more accurately, the Mennonites.

Edward Bristow established the settlement’s first store, tavern, shoe shop, as well as, a potashery.  It is also interesting to note that the first post-office was located in his premises, only to be moved in later years to Christmann’s Hotel.

In 1861, the Elmira House was erected as numerous artisans and merchants came to Elmira to earn a living.  As a result, Elmira became know as an ‘enterprising’ community.  In December 1886, Elmira entered a new chapter of its history with the incorporation of the settlement as a village by charter.  At this date, the population of the newly incorporated village stood at 760 people.  Throughout the 1870’s and 1880’s, Elmira acquired various cultural trappings, including a brass band (1873) and a library (1885), which boasted an initial membership of 20 people.

Industry has always held a vital place within Elmira.  Apart from a sash and door factory, Elmira possessed a flour mill.  This particular business was in fact, the community’s earliest industry, built by a joint stock company.  In 1869 this business was purchased by John and Jacob Ratz.

On January 1, 1923, Elmira, with a population of 2500, became an incorporated town.

Today, Elmira is a thriving community offering a variety of restaurants, bed and breakfasts, and specialty shops such as quilt, bridal and gift stores. “

Here are ten reason why you should visit or move to Elmira.

1. Elmira Maple Syrup Festival. The syrup festival will take place on April 5 this year. This is the largest one-day festival attracting nearly 70,000 people. If you haven’t been to the syrup festival then I think it’s time you went. Geeked

2. Three grocery stores for around 12,000 people. No Frills, Price Choppers and IGA
Population data extracted from Woolwich Township website PDF file

3. 10-15 minute drive to North Waterloo

4. Toronto is a little over an hour drive away

5. Average house price for a single-detached house is approximately $274,000. Based on MLS board statistics.

6.  Home of the Elmira Sugar Kings! http://www.kings.on.ca/ .

7. Elmira has a Tim Hortons! “I’ll have a large decaf double, double with a mint shot please Stick out tongue

tims logo 10 Reasons Elmira Ontario is a great place to live

8. Elmira is getting a brand new recreation facility. “Woolwich Memorial Centre”

New Woolwich Memorial Centre

9. There are many walking trails and parks. http://www.woolwich.ca/en/tourism/trailslist.asp

10. Elmira golf club. 18 holes, semi-private

These are just a handful of reasons for someone thinking about moving to Elmira. With all the churches, and character. Elmira has just the right amount of old-fashioned flair without the distance that the other small towns have from a major centre. With the new rec centre, Elmira will be an even more exciting and desirable place to live and raise families.
