Toronto Homes – Moving From Kitchener to Toronto

From time to time we work with clients who are relocating to Kitchener-Waterloo and relocating from Kitchener Waterloo. When we have clients who are moving away from the area, we want to make sure that they are well taken care of on the other end. Here is a guest post from a Re/Max agent in Toronto who really knows what it takes to assist buyers and sellers with all their Toronto Real Estate needs. Please enjoy the following post from John Helfrich, Broker at RE/MAX Hallmark Realty Ltd, Brokerage!

Toronto Homes – Moving From Kitchener to Toronto

Kitchener/Waterloo

Kitchener Waterloo has a lot of what Toronto wants. Green space, lower population density, bigger lots and newer, more affordable homes. But sometimes your career dictates that  you have to move to Toronto or face a masochistic daily commute.

If and  when the time comes for you to move to Toronto, I’d like to show you a side of Toronto you may not know about. The East Side, or East End Toronto, as we call it. This isn’t ‘the ‘burbs’ and it’s not Scarborough. It’s an area that’s 5 to  30 minutes outside the Downtown core in what was the old City of Toronto.

There are 4 communities in the East End that have quick commutes to downtown, distinct identities, and great quality of life. The Beaches, Leslieville, Danforth Village and Riverdale.

The Beaches

The Beaches community looks and feels more like a lakeside resort town than a big city neighbourhood. In the summertime, thousands of Torontonians and tourists flock to The Beaches to walk on The Boardwalk, exercise along the Martin Goodman Trail, relax on the clean swimmable beaches, or shop and dine at the colourful stores and restaurants along Queen Street.

Queen Street East in the Beaches was chosen the Best Main Street in all of Ontario by TV Ontario in 2002. It’s like the main drag of the small town I grew up in…only better. It’s big enough to have great retail shopping and restaurants, but small enough that you still meet your neighbours when you’re out and about. It really feels like a small town inside the big city.

Leslieville

Demand for Leslieville real estate is strong and keeps getting stronger. It’s evolved from an up-and-coming neighbourhood into one of East End Toronto’s hottest and hippest communities. Founded in the late 1800’s for factory and garden workers, Leslieville has recently  gentrified – yet it still offers more of an urban edge than neighbouring Riverdale or The Beaches.

Riverdale

Riverdale is one of East End Toronto’s oldest and most established communities. Owners and visitors both enjoy the local chef-run restaurants, the expansive parks, and the beautiful Victorian and Edwardian homes.

Just about anything that’s an easy walk to the Danforth (and the subway) or well-renovated is in extremely high demand. The same can be said about any home in the highly-ranked Jackman School catchment area. Prices are on the high side but local residents feel it’s worth it for the convenience and lifestyle.

Danforth Village

Also known as Danforth Mosaic and East Danforth, it’s quite a long strip that runs both North and South of The Danforth from Jones Avenue, nearly all the way to Victoria Park.

Danforth Village / East Danforth was named one of Toronto’s top five up-and-coming neighbourhoods in 2010 by the Globe and Mail. This is pretty much the final frontier for affordable housing in East End Toronto. Increasing numbers of buyers find it’s tough to get better value in East End Toronto than this multi-cultural neighbourhood.

If you’re looking to buy a home in Toronto, The East End offers homes in every price range, from luxury estate style properties to cozy starter homes or condos, all in established, centrally located neighbourhoods.
